Sr. Director of Research & Development, Myra Medical


Myra Medical is a Shifamed Portfolio Company focused on the development of a next-generation minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) device. We are currently looking for a hands-on Sr. Director of R&D who is innovative in their creative thinking, problem solving, and a collaborative team player. This position represents an exciting opportunity to join the Myra team at an early stage where you can make significant contributions to both design and manufacturing. As a Sr. Director of R&D on the Myra team, you will be responsible for design development, developing component manufacturing methods, process optimization, and verification & validation testing.


Including but not limited to:

  • Work as part of a cross-functional team to develop, verify, and validate product designs through bench, in-vitro, and in-vivo testing
  • Work in synergy with the CTO and manage direct engineering reports
  • Develop bench top models and test methods for use during iterative design development and validation testing
  • Interact with physicians to assist with product demonstrations and product testing
  • Ensure an effective documentation system is in place and utilized throughout the development process inclusive of R&D lab notebooks, design reviews, Manufacturing Process Instructions (MPIs), test methods, and test reports
  • Working with the engineering team and Shifamed’s in-house counsel, proactively manage and contribute to the generation of new intellectual property
  • Contribute to the intellectual property position of the company via lab notebook documentation, invention disclosures and prototypes to demonstrate reduction to practice. Participate in technical “brainstorming” sessions to generate new intellectual property.


  • Experience with nitinol processing
  • Experience in laser cutting and micromachining
  • Experience in finite element modelling and analysis
  • Experience in the ophthalmology space preferred
  • Experience with silicon, casting, and molding processes
  • Experience with process optimization (design of experiments) and fixture design
  • Experience with evaluating and managing supplier capabilities, materials, and fabrication processes including: nitinol processing, adhesive bonding, extrusion, casting and injection molding
  • Experience working in a R&D environment
  • Proficient in SolidWorks
  • Experience working in a lab and cleanroom environment
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to work independently or in project team setting


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, MSc preferred
  • 12+ years of medical device industry experience, 6+ years of managerial experience.
  • Previous experience bringing new products to market
  • Previous experience working with preclinical testing, clinical trials, and data collection
  • Experience working under quality systems designed to meet governmental regulations
  • Excellent communications skills (both written and verbal) required
  • Excellent presentation skills are required
  • Ability to work independently or in team setting required
